Why are sticky notes so popular?
This is a question I ponder every time I have to pick up yet another sticky note that has fallen off my computer monitor. If I’m away from my computer, the sticky notes seem to have no problem hanging on. However, if I’m anywhere in the vicinity they immediately fall.
I believe I can attribute this phenomenon to one or more of the following:
- Just as looking at a pot of water will make it not boil, looking at a sticky note will make it not stick. My eyes, it would seem, have magical powers.
- Since I sit directly in front of them, my breath harms the sticky notes. Perhaps I need to buy a different brand of mouth wash?
- The sticky notes are alive and they’re tormenting me.
My money’s on the third one.
This would certainly explain why, even when I do not touch them, sticky notes smear when I write on them in pencil.
It would also explain why my tape dispenser is always at a different place on my desk when I come into work in the morning. The sticky notes know that I adhere them to my monitor with tape after they have fallen down, so when I leave my office each night the sticky notes try to hide the tape from me. Those clever little jokers.
It’s because they are alive that I am hesitant to wish sticky notes had more… stickiness. On the one hand, this would keep them from falling down all the time. But extra stickiness would also make them more powerful.
If I fall asleep at my desk, I might awaken to find sticky notes all over me. Whereas before they would fall off as soon as I looked at them or breathed on them, their extra stickiness would enable them to cling to me for dear life. Would I be able to get them off me before reinforcements arrived from the supply closet? If I am unable to best them, would they go on to take over the world?
I don’t think I’m exaggerating in the least when I say the future of mankind could hinge on my not falling asleep at my desk tomorrow.
Humor-blogs wants to steal my tape dispenser.
I'm a cypher, wrapped in an enigma, smothered in secret sauce. Also, my name is Kev and I own this here website.

Rickey’s actually got a sticky note widget on his laptop–it allows him to post little digital sticky notes on his powerbook desktop. Best invention ever!

@Rickey: It’s even better than Windows ME??
;-) 3.4.08 at 7:43 pm:
@Rickey: Same here! I have a Macbook and I use Stickies as well.
They aren’t as alive as kev’s though.

I have a pet slug, Jimbo. I just use regular paper, put some slug food on the other side of the stcky note, and, after Jimbo slithers across the paper I can stick it anywhere.

Jimbo? The frogster is killing me. Once, I had a pet snail I found in the irrigation ditch near our house. I kept it in an ice cream container all summer and it had babies. Sadly, while the frogster was joking, I am not.
Four of the sticky notes on my computer are starting to come unstuck. Does this mean they’re dying or coming alive?

@Erin: A pet snail? You don’t… still have the snail or the babies (or the grandbabies) today, do you?
Sticky notes don’t die. They wait.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
