Totally Pointless Reviews: Sticky Notes
March 4, 2008

Why are sticky notes so popular?

This is a question I ponder every time I have to pick up yet another sticky note that has fallen off my computer monitor. If I’m away from my computer, the sticky notes seem to have no problem hanging on. However, if I’m anywhere in the vicinity they immediately fall.

I believe I can attribute this phenomenon to one or more of the following:

  • Just as looking at a pot of water will make it not boil, looking at a sticky note will make it not stick. My eyes, it would seem, have magical powers.
  • Since I sit directly in front of them, my breath harms the sticky notes. Perhaps I need to buy a different brand of mouth wash?
  • The sticky notes are alive and they’re tormenting me.

My money’s on the third one.

This would certainly explain why, even when I do not touch them, sticky notes smear when I write on them in pencil.

It would also explain why my tape dispenser is always at a different place on my desk when I come into work in the morning. The sticky notes know that I adhere them to my monitor with tape after they have fallen down, so when I leave my office each night the sticky notes try to hide the tape from me. Those clever little jokers.

It’s because they are alive that I am hesitant to wish sticky notes had more… stickiness. On the one hand, this would keep them from falling down all the time. But extra stickiness would also make them more powerful.

If I fall asleep at my desk, I might awaken to find sticky notes all over me. Whereas before they would fall off as soon as I looked at them or breathed on them, their extra stickiness would enable them to cling to me for dear life. Would I be able to get them off me before reinforcements arrived from the supply closet? If I am unable to best them, would they go on to take over the world?

I don’t think I’m exaggerating in the least when I say the future of mankind could hinge on my not falling asleep at my desk tomorrow.

Humor-blogs wants to steal my tape dispenser.

Don't have a photo next to your name? Want one? They're called Avatars. No, it has nothing to do with that James Cameron movie. No, I don't know why they're called that. Look, do you want one or not? Gosh, you're difficult.
