The boom lift operation charts are available in the Operating Guide that comes with the device, or in its specifications sheet (equipment catalog). These graphs are in a 2-D shape of a bow, showing graphs of the active area of the booms so that the accessibility of the device can be easily identified. This is an extremely useful tool in choosing the most suitable lifter for the job at the site.

The device name usually reflects the maximum floor height of the device, for example the Model Genie S-60 XC is the name of a 60ft (about 18m) telescopic boom lift. As a general rule, the maximum horizontal reach of a straight boom boom is usually less than 9ft from the height to the floor. However, to ensure safety, the operator must always refer to the boom lift’s operating chart and operating instructions before starting work.

Many boom lift models have the same basic specifications as height to floor, horizontal reach, but there are significant differences in their performance charts. This has the potential to affect workers’ productivity as well as their ability to access a particular job position.

Currently, there are many activity charts that provide additional guidance on double load operating zones (there are 2 types of payloads). Dual load boom lifters, such as the Genie Xtra Capacity range, offer two unlimited and limited load capacities to the working platform, depending on the boom position. Operator’s unlimited load capacity is a term used by most manufacturers to designate load capacity that applies to all working positions in equipment performance charts. Operator floor limited load capacity is a term used by some manufacturers to refer to the restricted load for certain work area segments on the equipment performance chart, usually zones the farthest new range area on the boom action chart.
